Method of Instruction:

The Principles of Management course is offered online as well as in the traditional “classroom” format.  The Internet course basically contains the same content as the traditional in-class course.  However, it is simply delivered to the student in an alternate, more flexible manner.  The traditional college course emphasizes class attendance and personal contact with the instructor to insure successful results.  While contact with the instructor is still important, courses taken strictly on the Internet emphasize different skills.  Maturity and self-discipline combined with technical competence are required to meet the challenge of the rigid course activity schedule.  No make-ups or late work will be accepted without prior approval from your Instructor.

Attendance: 

The traditional college course emphasizes class attendance and personal contact with the instructor to insure successful results.  While contact with the Internet course instructor is still important, courses taken on line emphasize different skills.  Maturity, self-discipline, and technical competence are required to successfully complete the Internet course.  Classes are attended on-line via a computer with a rigid schedule of web and course activities.  Students are held to standards similar to those found in the workplace and are expected to have an open willingness to learn while completing all assignments on time.  Strict deadlines are maintained with no make-ups permitted without prior Instructor’s approval.

Course Objectives: 

1.         Describe what management is, why management is important, what managers do, and how managers utilize organizational resources efficiently and effectively to achieve organizational goals. [LO1]

2.         Explain what values and attitudes are and describe their impact on managerial action. (LO2)

3.         Explain why managers should strive to create ethical organizational cultures. (LO2)

4.         Explain why the ability to perceive, interpret, and respond appropriately to the global environment is crucial for managerial success. (LO1)

5.         Describe the six steps that managers should take to make the best decisions. (LO2)

6.         Identify the three main steps of the planning process and explain the relationship between planning and strategy. (LO1)

7.         Describe the types of organizational structures managers can design, and explain why they choose one structure over another. (LO3)

8.         Define organizational control, and identify the main output and behavior controls managers use to coordinate and motivate employees. (LO1)

9.         Explain how goals and needs motivate people and what kinds of goals are especially likely to result in high performance

10.      Describe what leadership is, when leaders are effective and ineffective, and the sources of power that enable managers to be effective leaders. (LO1)

11.      Explain why groups and teams are key contributors to organizational effectiveness. (L01)

12.      Explain why strategic human resource management can help an organization gain a competitive advantage. (LO1)

13.      Explain why effective communication—the sharing of information—helps an organization gain a competitive advantage, and describe the communication process. (LO2)

14.      Explain the role of operations management in achieving superior quality, efficiency, and responsiveness to customers. (LO1)

Grading Criteria: 

1.       Your final course grade will be based on the submission of:

a.       Fifteen (15) chapter quizzes; (15%)

b.      Four (4) video case studies; (20%)

c.       The analysis of three (3) current news articles; (15%)

d.      Four (4) major exams; (30%) and

e.      A comprehensive final examination. (20%)

2.       The Chapter Quizzes are administered on-line and available from both the “Assignment” directory on the Homepage and are also linked from their due dates on the “Course Calendar”.

3.       The “Case Studies” assignments are available from both the “Assignment” directory on the Homepage and are also linked from their due dates on the “Course Calendar”.

4.       The Articles assignments are available from both the “Assignment” directory on the Homepage and are also linked from their due dates on the “Course Calendar”.

5.       The Major Exams cover between three and four chapters; are administered on-line; are available from both the “Assignment” directory on the Homepage and is linked from their due dates on the “Course Calendar”.

Method of Evaluation: 

1.       Letter grades will be assigned according to the following scale:

A:      90 - 100%

B:      80 - 89%

C:      70 - 79%

D:      60 - 69%

F:    < 60%

2.       Components of your final course grade will be as follows:

d.      Examinations                                                                                                30%

Adding and Dropping Course: 

If for whatever reason you decide to drop this course, it is your responsibility to inform the Office of Admissions and Records in a timely manner of that decision.  You must complete the proper forms at the Office of Admissions and Records in person or submit that request in writing.  To simply stop attending classes will result in you receiving a grade of "F".
